Sydney
Dean Widders is a proud Anaiwan Indigenous Australian who has significantly impacted Rugby League, social change, and reconciliation. Born and raised in Armidale, New South Wales, Dean's early talent in rugby league led him to be identified by the great Arty Beetson, for a trial game for the Sydney Roosters at just 14 years old. His successful NRL career saw him playing for the Roosters, Parramatta Eels, and South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he was known for his versatility, strong defense, and exceptional tackling ability.
Off the field, Dean's dedication to Indigenous rights and reconciliation is unwavering. As the Indigenous Wellbeing Manager for the NRL, he is a passionate advocate, frequently speaking at events and conferences. His dynamic and engaging speaking style, coupled with his inspiring stories of leadership, teamwork, and resilience, make him a sought-after speaker.
Dean's journey is also highlighted in the documentary *Araatika: Rise Up!* (2021), which captures his efforts to create a pre-match dance celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This inspiring film showcases the development of the 'Unity Dance' against Australia's Indigenous sporting and social history backdrop.
His impact extends beyond Rugby League; Dean works closely with various organisations, sporting bodies, and communities to foster cultural understanding and promote equality. He is the host of NITV's *Over the Black Dot* television show and a regular guest on FOX Sports.
In 2004, Dean received the prestigious Ken Stephens award from the NRL, recognizing his tireless efforts in using his platform and media presence to drive positive change.
Through his role at the NRL, his coaching positions, and media involvement, Dean continues to champion his mission of creating meaningful change.
